Because that’s the only thing separating these two really. Since price and everything else are damn near the same.

The only only thing where the F150 excels over the Silverado is the sunroof, since the F150 gets an awesome panoramic unit compared to the Silverado’s single panel unit.

Both companies need to step up and offer 8-speeds on their mainstream motors though. GM offers one on the 6.2, but not the 5.3. Ford doesn’t have one on any F150 motor. Step up your transmission game boys, Ram’s had you beat for a few years now!

I’d get the F150 just for the big EcoBoost. I like the stylings of the Silverado, but I like the F150 a liitttle more in that department as well. Problem is, these trucks have gotten so freaking expensive, it doesn’t matter what I think. Seems like people cross-shop F150’s and RangeRovers these days, just looking for a Large Luxury vehicle with 4WD to get them up to their winter condo in Aspen without much trouble.

Yes, but the F-150 is made of aerospace grade aluminum.

On the other hand, the Silverado has high strength rolled steel.

So, I guess they pretty well tie there, too.

At least the GM has a column shifter... although it does not have a front bench... *sigh*

The new F-150 really looks fantastic in person. The new Silverado looks good, but is too similar to the last one.

Okay, leaving the specialty model out of the equation, there’s pretty much nothing between them.

The thing about trucks is that you never pay anywhere close to MSRP. I bet both those trucks could be picked up for at or under $50k. And both of those are basically fully loaded models.

They both look sharp if you ask me. The Silverado’s design was more evolution while the F150s was definitely more revolution.

No doubt. As crazy as it sounds, 6,000-8,000 off MSRP is probably pretty common. Even with that, you’re looking at a $50,000 vehicle after TT+L. You can have a stripper model for mid-20’s, but it only really gets fun over 40k it seems. I lust over the EcoBoost almost daily.

They both have good and bad characteristics behind the wheel too. I’ve been shopping these.

The 6.2 Silverados are still unicorns, there are very limited choices in that motor size, as of about a week ago the dealer could only find one that was 600+ miles away from where I live. The 5.3 should have good power but it feels really sluggish, like hitting the gas pedal is just a suggestion.

The Ford’s 3.5 EcoBoost is a vastly more powerful and responsive choice, but where it wins in acceleration and power it totally looses in driving feel. You feel really disconnected from the road in the truck in a lot of ways.

I can’t imagine the 6.2 in the Silverado is anything but excellent, though. I really wish there was one within reasonable driving distance...

My thinking has been drifting recently, since I’m so I’m not really pumped about the Ram, F150, or Silverado/Sierra, just grabbing a ‘12 Tundra Limited with a 5.7 in in a slightly lower price range that I’m looking at in new trucks. The interior in those trucks is a very nice place to be.

My boss just spent $40k on a fully-loaded brand spanking new TRDSPORTSR5Billion4x4TacoSupremo. Don’t get me wrong, it’s freaking sweet, inside and out... But I use my truck for hauling furniture and garbage. Seeing luxury-quality “pickups” everywhere is just goofy to me. And they are freaking GIGANTIC.

We are definitely in a golden age of pickups. Unfortunately the prices are golden too.

If someone gave me my choice of a new F-150, Silverado, Ram or Sierra, I'm not sure which one I'd choose.

$40k on a Tacoma is everything that’s wrong with the light duty small truck market. The blame for this lands squarely on the Tacoma. Especially considering almost nothing has changed with the Tacoma in 10 years, and the new models are not a whole lot different. Here in Colorado, Tacoma’s are EVERYWHERE. It’s like the vehicle of choice for 25-35 male. Most have bed covers and never come close to seeing mud. The Tacoma’s these days are bigger than the pre-Tundra T100’s by a noticeable margin.

Agreed! Furthermore, you can’t even buy a base cab Taco anymore! I think Nissan has been that way for a bit as well, and the Frontier is also much bigger than it once was.

Tacomas are incredibly popular here in WA as well... I use a bare bones Taco as my work truck.

The Tacoma has ruined this market to the point Nissan can charge $30,000 for a Frontier too! A FRONTIER! Sheesh.. I was confident the new GM twins we’re going to change thigns, but its clear that (most) of the people who buy these trucks don’t buy them because they need a truck. Seeing a base Tacoma is always a shocker, with the grey plastic exterior trim bits and the smaller wheels.

I always love seeing/hearing truck fanboys argue about who makes the best truck. There’s so many years, trims, drivetrains, sizes, purposes, and things which you can be “best” at that it’s pointless to bother trying to decide.

Of course, I live in the midwest. So I’m not going to stop hearing about it anytime soon.

I haven’t looked at sales, but seeing a new Canyon here is rare as hell. I’ve seen one, ever. I have seen maybe four Colorados. When I read all the hype articles on FP about the GM twins, I could only disagree. I didn’t believe that they would be able to rock Taco’s stranglehold on that market segment quickly, if at all, not to mention certain prevailing brand perspectives regarding light pickups (hint: Toyota good). And with the new Taco coming out next year... I mean unless the first 100 sold catch on fire, I don’t see Toyota sweating.

I am really disappointed in the styling of the new F-150. The front end is fugly, and the rest of the truck looks exactly like the old one.

Mechanically they are very different. Ford has gone super high tech, with their twin turbo V6s. Chevy has chosen the route of highly refining the good old V8. The torque curve of that Ecoboost is really impressive. But when the truck is 10 years old, with 150k miles on it, perhaps that simple V8 will be giving its owner a lot less trouble. Time will tell.

You do know Ford and GM are co-developing a many-speed (9?) transmission for their trucks, and I believe a 10-speed for cars, supposedly available in 2016 or 2017? IIRC the new Raptor will be the first recipient, but it's after midnight, I spent the day at a winery with my wife and in-laws, so I'm not all that coherent right now.

I’ll second Zoidberg on that one. I had a 2010 Tundra and came to hate it to the point that I took the hit and traded it on a 2011 F-150 after a year. The EB has similar power numbers to the 5.7, feels a little bit smoother and gives hugely better mileage. The smoother feel is mostly the throttle by wire calibration as the 2010 Tundra’s were real touchy at light throttle when pulling away from a stop. So touchy that if you happened to hit bumps at low speed you would jerk all over from your foot moving due to bumps. The mileage on the Tundra was abysmal too, and there were a ton of little things that just absolutely annoyed the shit out of me after a while. The F-150 has a lot nicer interior and 25%+ better mileage while not giving up any power or capability. I regret taking the hit on the Tundra, but it was worth it to me because I like the Ford so much more.

Yeah, I know the “right” answer is F150. I should give it another test drive. I had been in a ‘12 750li (not at all my normal car) for two weeks right before driving it, I could see a lot of things not feeling right to drive after getting used to that car.

Both companies need to step up and offer 8-speeds on their mainstream motors though. GM offers one on the 6.2, but not the 5.3. Ford doesn’t have one on any F150 motor.

Ford doesn’t offer anything more than a 6-speed in their entire lineup. It makes me laugh because that new co-developed transmission being put into production in a few years means that their cars will be jumping from 6 gears to like 10.
